FROM THE PRESIDENT--
Can you believe another month has whizzed by??? As I send this the sun is shining; the day is warm; blossom everywhere and we are into the warmer longer days! We will even put the clocks ‘on’ soon…….
As you know we have the data projector in place in the meeting room, and on 4 September Jim Mackenzie prepared an excellent programme on printing onto a CD….OK there was a glitch or two with the gear, but Jim remained calm and collected, and we were able to see the finished CD ….very impressive-Thank you Jim! At least when we see a glitch we realise that with a PC, glitches can happen to any of us!!!
On Thursday 2 October at 1.30pm Robert McTague is planning an intriguing programme for us on Question and Answer Day. It involves using the computer to lift us beyond our hum-drum earthly world, to explore the universe in a way we can manage using free software! You will have to come to find out more!!!!
We are now in the 5th course round for 2008 and there is one to go starting on 27 October…please contact Alma and book yourself in!
You will see the details of our SeniorNet Sunday lunch inthis newsletter. Please ring promptly to book in, with a friend/partner, as numbers are limited. It is good to meet and eat together….
I often think how fortunate we are to have been ‘here’ long enough to meet all the new technology; to understand and use what we can, and marvel at the rest!
Greetings to all, with a special thought to anyone with health concerns….
Best wishes.
Maureen

COMPUTER BUYING GUIDE—LAPTOP VERSUS DESKTOP
AUGUST NEWSLETTER — SOME FELT THIS ARTICLE WAS A BIT BIAS—PERHAPS THIS WILL REMEDY THAT
You've been cooped up indoors for the past half-decade surfing the Internet. Your hair has grown down to your feet, the pizza delivery guy is your only source of direct human contact, and your mother has been telling her friends that you're on business in Europe. We don't blame you; we blame your awful desktop computer.
Your PC-addicted existence is getting more pathetic by the day, but you just can't bear to tear yourself from the beckoning glow of your computer screen. Well, we've got the perfect suggestion for you - buy a laptop! With a laptop, you can actually be out in the sun as you're checking your e-mail on a minute-by-minute basis. And with a laptop, you can reclaim the life you once had.
DECIDE IF A LAPTOP IS RIGHT FOR YOU
A laptop (a.k.a. "portable") is a travel-sized computer that fits on top of your lap (hence its ingenious name) and makes you look like a cool and efficient person (or a workaholic). Laptops generally have Microsoft Word, Internet access, and all the other stuff that you've come to depend on every day. Smaller than a desktop computer, laptops usually have four distinct components: a monitor, a keyboard, a system unit, and a mouse. So as you can tell, laptops encompass all the components of desktops, yet still somehow manage to look pretty cute. Here are some other advantages to owning a laptop…
Advantages
Portability. The number one reason why people get laptops is because they can bring it anywhere - the beach, on a trip, to church, to the bathroom (just don't email us from there… that's sick). If you're constantly on the go, a laptop will come in very handy.
Size and Weight. You live in an apartment the size of a closet. Are you gonna cram a hard drive, a 15-inch monitor, and a keyboard onto the ironing board you use as a desk? Laptops are lighter and much more compact than any PC or Mac system, so they'll help you save tons of space. And when you're not using it, you can fold it up in a briefcase and stick it under your bed with ease.
Image. You can't help but be a little jealous of the woman pulling out a sleek black laptop on the train. She's cool.
In Case of Emergency
Many of us carry our mobile phones with dozens of names and numbers stored in its memory but yet nobody, other than ourselves, know which of these numbers belong to our near and dear ones?
If you were involved in an accident or had a heart attack, the people attending to you may pick up your mobile phone but would not know which number to call to inform family members. Yes, there are dozens of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency?
For this reason, it makes sense to have one or more telephone numbers stored under the name ICE (IN CASE of EMERGENCY) in our mobile phones.
Recently, the concept of "ICE" has been catching up quickly. It is a simple, but important method of contact during emergency situations.
As cell phones are carried by most of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during an emergency as "ICE" (meaning In Case of Emergency ).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when they went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose.
In an emergency, Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff would then be able to quickly contact your next of kin, by simply dialling the number stored as "ICE".
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE 1, ICE 2 and ICE 3, or to put the number at the top of the 'phonebook' and save search or scrolling use aICE 1, aICE 2, aICE 3 etc.
A great idea that should l make a difference. Pass on this idea to all your friends and nearest and dearest. It really could save your life, or put a loved one’s mind at rest.
